about

'Cuervos' is the first single off Biomigrant & Plu Con Pla’s upcoming EP 'En Defensa De Sus Dioses'. The collaboration first began as a working relationship and friendship that started in 2017, when the US-born producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Alfred Wagner (Biomigrant) visited the Fundación Tumac, a foundation dedicated to promoting traditional music, dance and instrument craftsmanship in Tumaco, Colombia. Plu con Pla, as a musical group, grew from these surroundings of roots music and culture, and from there they have expanded their style, incorporating influences from reggae and urban genres alongside the social discourse present in the lyrics of the group's director, Harold Tenorio. After Plu con Pla entered the world of electronica via a vinyl remix release of their first album, they got together with Biomigrant to further immerse themselves in the world of synths, beats, and sampling, mixing a musical tradition formed throughout generations in the Colombian South Pacific with sounds that respond to urban, industrial and digital daily life. The lyrics of the song Cuervos, written by Harold, question the way humanity relates to their environment, and warn that the consequences will come back to haunt us. It is based on oral histories from Francisco Tenorio, Harold's father, and the founder of Tumac Foundation. Through samples, we hear Don Francisco explain how before, they always asked permission to harvest trees to make their instruments, and now, broader cultural practices don’t understand the importance of that symbolic act or the conservation it ties into. The group interprets the song on traditional instruments from the Colombian Pacific (bombo, cununuos, marimba, and guasa) that they themselves built from local wood. The rhythm takes the 6/8 groove of Currulao and translates it into the deep sounds of an 808 drum machine, before the beat switches to a house driven climax accompanied by percussion, a chorus, and trumpet melodies.

The song was mastered by the Japanese producer Yosi Horikawa, and the cover art was illustrated by Colombian artist Soma Difusa.

The full EP comes out on October 13, accompanied by two live videos.

lyrics

Nos concediste el permiso
El permiso de existir
Y estaba criando cuervos

about

Biomigrant Bogotá, Colombia

"The North-American flutist, producer and DJ recovers, with his sound, the heart of the meridional America in which its woodwinds, gaitas, and african drums are the protagonists, brought to a downtempo that leads into a dance in which rhythms and songs from all over the world are welcome."
